Milestones Reached During Express 2011 Season

(Tracy) – The 2011 season was an historic one for the Tracy Express.  For the third time in their four year history, the Express won at least one playoff game, before bowing out of the Gopher League Tournament.

Further, though several offensive milestones were passed for the Express in 2011, most notably was the accomplishment by Express right fielder, Aaron Walling, who became the first Tracy player to amass 100-career hits on his career.

Walling accomplished that with a single late in a regular season game against Hadley, in Milroy.  In doing so, Walling became the charter member of the Express Century Club.

Walling has never had fewer than 20-hits in a season with Tracy, including a career high and single season record of 37 in 2009.

Interestingly enough, Walling also became the first Express player to reach the 50-career run scored mark, he is also the only Express player to score 50-runs in his career to this point as well.

-As a team, the Express also set a record for most doubles hit in a single season with 39.  It breaks the old record of 35, hit in 2009.

Top Seeded Wilmont Knocks Tracy Out Of Tournament

(Wilmont) The Tracy Express were eliminated from the Gopher League Playoffs with a loss to the Wilmont Cardinals on Sunday, 11-4.

The Express fell to Wilmont for the third time this season, and the loss ends the season at 8-24 for the Express.

Tylan Gylling started on the mound for the Express, he was attempting to come back on three days rest, but the lack of rest and a strong Wilmont lineup were too much for the Express. Gylling was replaced on the mound in the third by Calvin Kosminskas, then Luke Walling, then Bryan Francis.

“I was asking a lot out of Tylan (Gylling) to get back up on the mound on three days rest, but he had a really solid outing against Wilmont earlier this year, and he had earned the opportunity,” said Express general manager Aaron Ziemer.  “In these elimination games, you do what has to be done, we felt our best chance to win was with him getting the start on the mound.”

Wilmont put five runs on the board in the first two innings, and held a 5-0 lead until the sixth inning.
Tracy though responded back by scoring four runs in the sixth inning highlighted by three extra base hits in the inning.  Robbie Slinkman doubled to lead the inning off, then Eric Hendrickx had one of his three hits on the afternoon to follow.  Jason Minett then singled to score Slinkman, and Troy Kepler doubled to score Hendrickx.  Darrick Allpress then hit the third double of the inning, driving in two, and the Express were back in the game.
But Wilmont jumped right back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs off of Kosminskas in the inning.  Luke Walling came on to get the Express out of a jam, and end the inning getting a double play ball. The damage was done though, the Express were unable to come back from the deficit this time, and fell 11-4.

Jason Minett led the Express offensively, he finished 4-4 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.  Darrick Allpress was 2-5 with 2 RBI,

Express Rally Back From Tough Start To Oust Hadley

(Pipestone) –  The Tracy Express moved on in the Gopher League playoffs, they defeated Hadley 10-5 on Friday night in Pipestone.

The Express rallied back from an early 4-0 deficit to come from behind and beat the Buttermakers, ending Hadley’s season, and allowing the Express to move on.

Tracy responded from three costly errors in the first inning, allowing four Hadley runs, with a run of their own in the second.  Then the Express erupted in a big sixth inning.  Robbie Slinkman led the inning off with a base hit, and Eric Hendrickx doubled.  Aaron Ziemer followed with a single to load the bases.  Jason Minett then hit a sharp single to score Slinkman, and Troy Kepler and Darrick Allpress drew walks to score two more Express runs.  Andrew Suby, then had an infield single to score Minett, and Kepler scored on a throwing error.  Slinkman followed with a double to score Suby, and Tracy
grabbed the 7-4 lead.

“I was really happy with our resiliency,” said Ziemer.  “I told the guys before the game, that no matter what happens tonight lets fight until the end, because we have the rest of the year to feel bad for ourselves if we lose, and honestly we really bounced back after that first inning, I am really proud of our guys, that showed a lot of character.”

Hendrickx then went to work on the mound, retiring the Buttermakers in order in the fourth, and pitching his way out of trouble in the fifth.  A lead off single from Matt Ackerman, and then hitting Eric Weineke could have gotten Hendrickx in trouble.  Zach Bruns bunted to move the runners over, and an error allowed a run to score, but the Express recovered to get the runner at second.  Then Hendrickx got a key strikeout against Luke Schneider to shut the door and get the Express out of trouble.

That sparked
Tracy for two more in the sixth, Aaron Walling reached on a fielder’s choice and Calvin Kosminskas walked, before Slinkman drove a ball to the left center field gap, bringing both around.
Hendrickx then struck out three Hadley hitters over the next two innings, pitching around a hit in each inning, before leaving the game after seven innings.  Hendrickx picked up the win, allowing five runs, just one earned, and striking out four.

“I can’t say enough about the way Hendo threw tonight, the way he got out of that fifth inning, with the big strikeout was huge,” said Ziemer.  “I turned to Suby and said, I think he had a little extra velocity in that situation, and he gassed it up and painted the outside corner, and got us out of the inning, that was crucial.”

Kosminskas went to the mound in the eighth, and pitched around a lead off hit, from Luke Schneider when Alex Peterson hit a line drive right at Express first baseman Greg Barnes. Barnes snared it, and touched first to double off Schneider.

Big Sixth Inning Leads Irish Past Express

(Marshall) –  The Tracy Express were beaten in the first round of the Gopher League Playoffs by the Milroy Irish on Wednesday night in Marshall, at Legion Field.

The Express fell 11-5, but like the first meeting between the two teams, allowed one big inning to beat them.  Milroy scored six runs in the sixth inning off of the Express and Tracy let another lead over the Irish slip away. The Express led 4-1 after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth, until the inning,

Express starter Tylan Gylling had been cruising, but showed some signs of fatigue in the fifth inning.  Gylling went back out for the sixth though and hit the leadoff batter, then followed that by allowing a single to Isaac Dolan.  After an RBI single by Derek Riley, Gylling had been able to record a fielders choice and a strike out, but then gave up a double to Cory Madison to cut the Express lead to 4-3.

Luke Walling entered the game, and gave up three consecutive hits allowing the Irish to claim a 7-4 lead over the Express. The Irish didn’t take the pressure off at that point, and put the game away with two more runs in the seventh and eighth.

Tracy
had their chances though, even after the Irish took the lead in the sixth, as the Express stranded 13 runners on base over the final six innings of the game.
